When planning to enjoy a day filled with hiking, the most important thing you can do is to be prepared. This includes proper equipment and plans (more on that in a moment), and part of the planning is to be sure you have a trail map. While many trail maps are available online, it isn’t a bad idea to also pick up a paper copy at the park office when you get there, in case your phone runs out of batteries or you end up somewhere remote with no signal. If you are not incredibly familiar with where you are, it can be easy for even an experienced hiker to get lost and become disoriented.
There are several essentials you’ll need while hiking. Some are to be expected, such as plenty of water and a compass. Trails are not always clearly marked and having a method to find your way is critical. Wearing practical clothing and dressing in layers will help ensure that you are properly equipped no mater what weather conditions you encounter. This includes quick-drying clothing and good, sturdy shoes. You’ll also want to remember things such as bear spray, if warranted where you’re hiking. Always take a buddy with you, and be sure to let someone else know where you’re going before you leave.
